Edwardsburg’s Alex Watts defeated 15-time champion Sue Watson in the womens finals of the Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament Sunday.

Watts, advanced to the finals with a 6-0 and 6-0 win over Sydney Foote. Watson reached the championship match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Brandywine’s Alyssa Robbins.

In the finals, Watts took a 1-0 lead in both sets. After dropping a game to Watson to make it 2-1, she won the next four games to close out the first set.

The second set was much tighter with Watson closing it to 4-3 before Watts won the final two games and the championship.

“I work on a lot of consistency,” Watts said about the difference between last year’s tournament and this year’s title. “I practiced widening my range and just working on shots so I had more in my bag.”

Watts said that she will use the victory to help prepare for next season when Edwardsburg joins the Wolverine Conference.

“It’s good practice and it’s relaxed,” she said. “It’s a good time to be out here and playing.”
