In honor of Flag Day Thursday, the Capt. Samuel Felt Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution let younger generations shine the light on the American flag.

The Dowagiac DAR chapter invited Marcellus Cub Scout Pack 530 to the Cass District Library Monday for its Flag Day celebration, which included a presentation by three Cub Scouts, led by sponsor John Messner, who presented facts about the American flag and a demonstration on how to properly fold the flag.

“The flag is an important part of what we do,” Messner said. “We teach the Cub Scouts what it means to honor and respect the flag.”

The pack has 12 active members and has been preparing for the presentation for a few weeks.
DAR Reagent Paula Johnson said she was excited to have the program include local children.

“They’re the ones who will keep our patriotism going,” Johnson said. “Whenever we can have children join us, we love it.”

The three Cub Scouts, AJ Shenfeld, his brother, Alex, and Danny Waltz, took turns presenting facts about the American flag and how to properly present the flag. Waltz’s mother, Kippy, attended the celebration and said she was happy to see some of the scouts present so well.

“They did a great job; they’re a rambunctious group of boys so to sit still and present so well was a challenge,” Waltz said. “I’m pretty proud of them.”

Messner agreed, saying he was glad the scouts could participate.

“It’s a unique opportunity for them (the boys),” he said.

The Capt. Samuel Felt Chapter DAR meets the second Monday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Cass District Library.
