The new Four Winds Dowagiac casino expected to be in operation by 2013 on M-51 South will be a boon for the small community — and southwest Michigan.

It will provide 100 jobs to local residents, patronize local businesses for supply purposes and draw visitors for its gaming, restaurant and other entertainment.

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, which owns Four Winds casinos in New Buffalo and Hartford, pitched its project to the Pokagon Township board last week.

The proposed casino will include 200 slots, table games, a multipurpose space and a 25-seat restaurant.

The highway will be modified to ease traffic flow, and the casino will be located on the south side of Dowagiac, which is an easy commute for Niles residents.

Tribal chairman Matt Wesaw said preference will be given to local business partners to supply the casino.
