Senior Kaytlyn Miller had a goal and an assist as host Niles blanked Battle Creek Central in the second round of the Big 16 Soccer Tournament Monday, 5-0.

The Vikings rolled out to a 3-0 halftime advantage on goals by Margaret Hoff, Sasha Zidar and Abigail Gaines.

Hoff’s goal came in the 16th minute and was assisted by Miller. Zidar scored in the 17th minute and Gaines in the 33rd minute. Both goals were assisted by Haley Akey.

Miller got on the board in the 60th minute as she extended the Niles lead to 4-0 with the assist by McKayla Book.

Niles capped the scoring in the 71st minute as Alexis Arnold found the back of the net with the assist going to Anne Tyler.

The Vikings held a commanding 19-2 advantage in shots on goal. Eva Nemeth was credited with a save. Sarah Smith split second half action in goal with Nemeth.

The Big 16 tourney continues Wednesday. It was unknown at press time if Niles would host another round or be on the road.

“We are trying to get some confidence going into the first round of districts,” Niles coach Jo Schau said. “They did a nice job today of finding the open person and passing the ball to their feet and moving the ball around. That was one of our goals. We have to get better at that. They played well. They found some open people and found the back of the net.”
