ALLEGAN — Chris Gantt won both the 800- and 1,600-meter relays to help Dowagiac to a fifth-place finish at the Allegan Invitational Friday.

Gantt was clocked at 4:25.01 in the 1,600 and 2:00.25 in the 800.

Dowagiac also got a first and second place from Sam Courtney in the discus and shot put.

Courtney tossed the discus 129-2, while he heaved the shot 45-11.

The Chieftains took first place in the long jump with a leap of 20-11.5 from Dontel Highsmith.

The Wolverine Conference took four of the first five places. Vicksburg won the boys meet with 117 points. Otsego was second with 114.5, Three Rivers third with 95 and Dowagiac fifth with 60.

Future Wolverine Conference school Edwardsburg was fourth with 94 points.

“We had a good effort all around,” Dowagiac boys coach Mike Stanger said. “Our best athletes stepped up. Sam Courtney had a career-best in the discus. Dontel Highsmith continued to win the long jump and Chris Gantt had two career-bests in the 800 and 1,600.”

Paw Paw won the girls meet with 98 points. Three Rivers was second with 90 and future Wolverine schools Berrien Springs and Coloma third and fourth with 71 and 68 points respectively.

Dowagiac finished eighth with 49 points.

Creona Rodgers won the high jump with a height of 5-4 and was second in the long jump (15-6.5) and 100-meters (13.18).

“Creona Rodgers had an outstanding day in the high jump,” Dowagiac girls coach Ken Jordan said. “We had some injury issues that we hope are minor.”
