The Dowagiac softball team had a triple-double against Plainwell in the nightcap of Wolverine Conference softball game Friday.

While 14 runs on 14 hits may be impressive, having 10 errors is not.

Still, the Chieftains, despite blowing a five-run lead in the seventh inning and nearly duplicating that feat in the ninth inning, came away with a 14-13 win against the Trojans and a split.

Plainwell won the first game 5-3 as it was able to take advantage of five Dowagiac miscues.

The Chieftains scored five runs in the top half of the ninth inning to pull out the victory.

Amanda Craft singled and moved to third on back-to-back wild pitches. She scored on a single by Sierra Herter. Following a strikeout and an error by the Trojans, Shelby Huston singled to drive in a run and make it 11-9.

Taylor Meiser followed with an RBI single and Tori Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to drive in another and make it 13-9.

Dowagiac capped the scoring when an error by the Plainwell third baseman allowed the 14th and most important run to score for the Chieftains.

As it did in the seventh inning when it gave up five runs with two outs, Dowagiac was able to get the first two outs of the inning without much drama.

But then the Trojans caught fire and scored four times before the Chieftains were able to slam the door and hold on for the victory.

Kourtney Mitchell had a pair of singles, a double and five RBIs for Dowagiac. Kristyn Turner added a single and a double, while Craft had three hits and Huston two.

“I told the girls that it was obviously not our best effort, but an ugly win is better than a cute loss any day,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “Mitchell has really come around lately. She had a couple of good games against Comstock, last week a couple of good games against Allegan and today she had five RBIs.

“She has been a real nice surprise as a freshman catcher.”

Smith went the distance to pick up the victory for the Chieftains.

In the opening loss, Craft, Herter and Mitchell all doubled for Dowagiac.
