The Edwardsburg boys and girls track teams fought through the gusty winds and cold temperatures and were victorious Monday in their Lakeland Conference dual meet against Cassopolis.

In the boys meet, the Eddies won, 106-30, and in the girls meet the Eddies won, 108-25.

“It was good just to get the meet completed because the weather was not ideal,” said Edwardsburg boys and girls track coach Beth Gunn. “So, we had a lot of slow times, but everyone did what they needed to do. It was a good workout.”

In the boys competition, the Eddies won 15 of the 17 events, while in the girls meet the Eddies won 14 of the 17 events.

“We really aren’t going to be concerned with the times so much,” Gunn said. “Obviously, we still want them to run hard, but we look more for places and for them to learn how to run in the wind. You never know what the regionals or the state finals are going to bring when it comes to weather. You have to be prepared to run in anything.”

There were some Edwardsburg individuals that seemed comfortable competing in the adverse conditions.

Greg Hall was a four-time champion for the boys team. Hall placed first in the (1,600-meter relay, 110-meter hurdles, 800-meter relay and 300-meter intermediate hurdles).

Three-time winners for the Eddies boys were Skye Roy (pole vault, 100 meters and 400-meter relay), Hunter Woods (3,200-meter relay, high jump and 1,600-meter relay), Adam Kendall (200 meters, 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay), Tyler Williamson (1,600-meter relay, 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay) and Josh Clark (1,600 meters, 800 meters and 1,600-meter relay).

“It was tough with all the head wind,” said Roy. “So far, these are the toughest conditions we’ve had to compete in this year. You just have to push harder and do the best you can.”

Roy, who’s a junior, has his two favorite events.

“I like the pole vault and the 400-meter relay the best,” Roy said. “The 400-meter relay is just intense doing the last leg and in the pole vault I like going high up in the air and feeling the bend with the pole.”

Leading the way for the Edwardsburg girls were four-time champions Olivia Hack (800-meter relay, 300-meter low hurdles, 200 meters and 1,600-meter relay) and Kristen Miller (high jump, 400 meters, 1,600-meter relay and 3,200-meter relay).

“It was pretty cold, but we got the job done as a team,” said Hack. “I’m happy with how we did today.”

Was Hack surprised she did so well?

“I was actually pretty nervous because of the wind with the hurdles,” Hack said. “But I feel pretty good about how I did in that event.”

Three time champions for the Edwardsburg girls were Aubrey Ritchey (3,200-meter relay, 1,600 and 1,600-meter relay) and Casey Garcia (pole vault, 800-meter relay and 400-meter relay).

“I’m pleased, in general as a whole, with both teams,” Gunn said. “The boys have been strong the last couple of years and the girls are really starting to come around.”

Dustin Miller was a double champion for the Cassopolis boys team. Miller placed first in the discus and shot put.
