Niles Utilities offers rebates for old fridges, freezers

Niles Utilities Department has recently doubled its cash rebate for old, secondary refrigerators and freezers from $30 to $60, giving customers a quick way to boost their home’s energy efficiency by saving up to $150 a year on customer utility bills.

Typically kept in garages and basements, older refrigerators or freezers can use up to three times the amount of energy of newer models, which is a steep price for keeping a few beverages and leftovers chilled.

“We are extremely pleased to double the rebate for the program. Now is an ideal time to consider whether you really need that extra refrigerator. Not only will you instantly start saving money on your electric bill, you’ll also make a ‘green’ contribution to your neighborhood and gain some extra cash,” said JW Rossow, utilities manager.
