Niles football coach steps down to take over golf position

Niles varsity football coach Dan Brawley has resigned to become the Vikings’ new golf coach.

Brawley, who took over for Dave Janicki in 2006, finished his career with a record of 21-33. The Vikings were 4-5 in five of the six seasons that Brawley coached the squad.

He will be replacing long-time Niles golf coach and Hall of Famer Greg Gunder, who resigned following last season.

“I’m excited to work with our established Niles golf program,” Brawley said. “Coach Gunder has built a solid foundation and my goal is to drive forward and continue to expand on the opportunities our boys golf program presents.

“The team achieved success both on the course and in the classroom as last year’s team achieved Academic All-State honors. I will certainly miss leading our football team. I have enjoyed the privilege of working with many top athletes in the football program and believe I am leaving the organization in excellent shape for my successor.”

The cupboard is hardly bare for Brawley as he takes over a team that was a state qualifier last season and returns Jared Langmeyer, John Schrader, Sam Clark and Josh Bell off that squad.
