JACKSON — The Dowagiac varsity wrestling team finished eighth at the Parma Western Invitational Saturday.

Sophomore Carl Grant was the lone champion for the Chieftains as he captured the 215-pound title.

In all, Dowagiac played five of the seven wrestlers it took to the tournament in the top four.

Matt Lyle and Tristan Howard were both runners-up, while Daniel Crandall finished third and Jacob Worthington placed fourth.

“Tristan Howard was a fourth seed and Jacob Worthington was an eighth seed going into the tournament,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “I was very impressed with how they both wrestled against good competition and placed well above their seeds.

“Matt Lyle, Carl Grant and Daniel Crandall continue to be very steady wrestling at a high level.”

The Dowagiac JV wrestling team competed in the Comstock Invitational Saturday.

Tyler Cross and Caleb Sands both finished second with Xavier Marquart and Tom Smith both taking third.

Aubrey Huston finished fourth as the Chieftains were third out of 13 teams.

“The boys did a great job and have showed great progress over the season,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said.
