The streak is over, but it was anything but easy.

The Brandywine boys basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Thursday night with a hard-fought 52-47 win over visiting New Buffalo.

The Bobcats (3-3) led by 12 points entering the final eight minutes of play, but had trouble making layups and free throws in the fourth quarter.

New Buffalo (2-3) outscored Brandywine 21-14 in the final eight minutes, but could not overcome the early deficit.

The Bobcats missed multiple layups after breaking the Bison’s press only to come up empty.

Brandywine was also 5-of-10 from the free throw line to keep New Buffalo in the game.

New Buffalo cut the lead to 48-47 with 32 seconds remaining on a basket by Kendall Artz.

The Bobcats’ Mykal Toxopeus broke the full-court pressure and underhanded a layup into the basket with 19.4 seconds left to extend the lead to 50-47.

Alex Erwin made 1-of-2 free throws 10 seconds later and Alex Ulrickson converted one of his two charity stripe tosses with 1.3 seconds showing on the clock to secure the victory.

Brandywine and New Buffalo played nearly even through the first two quarters with the Bobcats taking a 12-10 lead after one period and extending it to 28-20 at halftime.

Brandywine outscored the Bison 16-10 in the second quarter and then 10-6 in the third quarter to open up its 12-point advantage heading into the fourth.

“They have to learn how to close out games,” Brandywine coach Nathan Knapp said. “They are better than the way they played tonight. Free throws, layups and all those little things helped keep New Buffalo in it.”

Evan Hartman was big inside for Brandywine and finished the night with a game-high 16 points.

The Bobcats also got 10 points from Toxopeus.

Kevin Levine tied for game-high honors as he led New Buffalo with 16 points.

Artz and Manny Cantu also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.
