Another record-setting run

Daily Star Photo/SCOTT NOVAK Nearly 2,300 runners participated in the First Source Bank Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day Run, which is a new record. Among the runners heading away from the 10K start/finish line is Niles girls’ cross country coach Dan VandenHeede (No. 199).

St. Joseph’s Charlie Felton has been busy this November.
The Bears’ sophomore standout helped St. Joseph finish second at the Michigan High School Athletic Association cross country state finals earlier this month. Monday, he won the sophomore division at the 45th Annual Southwestern Michigan College Turkey Trot.
Felton added the mens’ 5K run titles to his resume at the 30th Annual First Source Bank Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day Run Thursday morning.
“It was fun, there was a lot of competition,” Felton said. “It was tough, but I just wanted to get out and compete.”
Felton will continue his busy week today as he competes in the Foot Locker Midwest Regional at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
“I wanted to get a few extra races in before the regional,” Felton said.
Niles’ Nicolas Schuck placed sixth with a time of 17:47.
Kara Egan of Indianapolis, Ind. Was the womens’ 5K winner with a time of 19:41. Niles’ Kimberly Law was second (19:49) and Torrie Eger of Buchanan was fourth (20:22). Niles’ Sarah Saylor finished 10th (21:27).
Craig Padgett of Terre Haute, Ind. is no stranger to area running fans. He captured Thursday’s 10K race with a time of 33:37. Padgett was second at Steve’s Run back in July.
Trisha Miller of Maquoketa, Iowa was the women’s 10K winner. The Bethel College junior posted a time of 36:07.
“It was really fun,” Miller said. “It’s a little hilly, but I really liked it. It was perfect (weather conditions) not much wind and it was nice and cool. I really loved it.”
Dowagiac’s Layla True finished ninth with a time of 43:56.
The 30th Thanksgiving Day Run drew a record 2,339 runners according to YMCA Chief Executive Officer Bret Hendrie.
