A South Bend man was able to escape his truck before it was hit by a train at U.S. Highway 12 and M-62 Tuesday night.

According to Chief Kenneth Wray of the Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Department, a small Chevrolet pickup driven by Trevor Beck turned onto the railroad tracks after passing the light west of the tracks at about 6:55 p.m. Beck said he does not see very well at night and thought he was turning south on M-62.

Beck heard the train and was able to exit the pickup truck and the tracks before the vehicle was hit by a northbound Canadian Northern train.

No injuries were reported and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
