Barney charged in stabbing

Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that the suspect in the Sunday morning stabbing that left one hospitalized was arraigned in Fourth District Court, Cassopolis, Monday afternoon.
Scott Nelson Barney, 27, of King Street, Dowagiac, was arraigned on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and probation violation.

His bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety for the Sunday assault charge, however, he is being held without bond as he was on probation for a prior charge of attempted felonious assault at the time of his arrest in Dowagiac.
Sentencing on the probation violation is set for Dec. 16 in Cass County Circuit Court.
Barney and Carlton “Grant” Hill, 34, of the 500 block of S. Front Street, Dowagiac, got into an altercation in the 24000 block of Morton Street in Wayne Township in the early morning hours of Nov. 13.
As a result, Hill was stabbed and had to be transported the Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac for his injuries.
Hill was treated for a stab wound and released with non-life-threatening injuries.
Barney was arrested by sheriff’s deputies at his home approximately two hours after the incident.
