SMC singer first at state

Southwestern Michigan College freshman Bryann Books took first place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing collegiate competition Nov. 5 at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.
She is eligible to submit a recording to represent the college in the regional competition which will be held next spring. The regional division includes Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.
Books, of Three Rivers, garnered the top spot in the first-year woman division by singing three pieces – “The Girl in 14G” by Jeanine Tesori, “Wie Melodiem zeiht es mir” by Johannes Brahms and  “Per La Gloria D’Adorarvi” by Giovanni Bononcini.
Books performed the latter two pieces in German.
Books was among four SMC students who participated in the competition Courtney Wilkins, of Three Rivers, and Chelsea Thompson and Jessica Hargett, both of Dowagiac, also represented the college in the collegiate competition which brought music students from colleges and universities across Michigan.
This marks the second year an SMC student has taken first place in the competition.
Shawn Morrison placed first in the first-year male division. David Carew directs SMC’s vocal music program.
