The Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan and Lake Michigan College teamed up Tuesday to organize three volunteer fairs in the area.
The volunteer fairs, which featured more than 30 nonprofit, governmental and faith-based agencies, took place at the Niles, Benton Harbor and South Haven campuses of Lake Michigan College.
Doris Higgins, director of the Volunteer Center, said the volunteer fair started three years ago when LMC officials approached her wanting to get their school more involved in volunteering.
“They wanted to push volunteering for students and staff and really create a culture of volunteerism,” Higgins said. “This is one-stop shopping for volunteer opportunities.”
Twenty-one organizations were on hand at the Bertrand Crossing campus volunteer fair Tuesday morning, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Red Cross, Polly’s Place, the Niles Salvation Army and Niles Community Gardens.
Last year more than 400 students, staff and community members attended the events.
New this year were laptop kiosks where people could register online to discover more volunteer opportunities.
