Bangor too much for Bobcats

Brandywine freshman boys soccer player Zach Schmidt shined during a difficult day Saturday for the Bobcats against Bangor.

Schmidt scored twice in a Bobcats 10-2 loss to Bangor.

Schmidt, who now has four goals on the year, wished his success had come in a victory.

“I played hard,” said Schmidt, whose team fell to 1-7. “It would have been better if we would have won. Number seven (Mario Diaz for Bangor) was a really good player. He controlled the game.”

Diaz scored four times and Roberto Leyva added two goals for the Vikings, who improved to 3-3.

Both of Schmidt’s goals came in the second half. The first goal came on an indirect kick on the goal line box with 34:59 left in the match. Bangor had scored the first six goals of the match before Schmidt got Brandywine on the scoreboard. The Vikings led 8-1 when Schmidt scored again on an assist from Jordan Hatch with 31:08 left in the match.

“(Schmidt) played very well today,” said Brandywine coach Evan Winkler. “He had two very good shots where he was in the right place at the right time and he finished. He almost had another (goal) near the end of the game. I’ve been trying to get him to play a little bit more aggressive and I thought he was more aggressive today. He had a nice game for us.”

Bangor finished with a 40-10 shots on goal advantage. The Vikings had the first 18 shots.

“What we’ve been really talking about lately in regards to defense is guarding the people that are the most dangerous,” Winkler said. “The last couple of games we’ve been scored on in the box. We made (Bangor) shoot from the outside and they scored from the outside. But at least we made Bangor shoot from farther out.”

Brandywine’s first shot came with 5:50 left in the first half when Alex Ulrickson had a shot go wide right. Bangor controlled play from the start and was eventually rewarded with 31:31 left in the first half when Gage Sefcik scored from 25 yards out. Leyva and Diaz each added two goals in the first half for the Vikings. Bangor owned a 24-3 shots on goal advantage in the first half.

“The thing that beat us the most is that we really let number seven (Diaz) pretty much dictate the game,” Winkler said. “He won everything in the middle. You’ve got to put a body on him.”

Diaz showed off his powerful leg at the end of the first half when he took a shot from midfield that went just over the goal.

“Oh man, I thought that was going to go in,” Winkler said.

The match ended in a mercy rule with 3:02 remaining when Daniel Lopez scored for Bangor after Diaz’s shot hit the crossbar.

“I was encouraged by our play, especially in the middle of that second half,” Winkler said. “I thought in the first five minutes of the second half we let them get a couple of quick goals then after that I thought we played pretty good and played even with them. We kept fighting and didn’t quit. We’ve still got a long ways to go and a lot of improving to do but I’m seeing some better things every game.”

Brandywine goalie Alexander Walters finished with 12 saves.
