Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees reviewed progress on construction of the Alumni Plaza, which is slated for completion when fall classes begin on Sept. 6.
Alumni Plaza, located in the center quadrangle of SMC’s Dowagiac campus, is dedicated to past, present and future friends of the college.
This elevated circular plaza with surrounding seating will be a gathering place for students and a site for outdoor performances. “The project is on time and on budget,” reported President Dr. David Mathews.
One interesting feature of the plaza will be a special area of bricks called the “Ring of Fire,” paying tribute to Ron Gunn for his 44-year history of coaching and teaching at SMC, as well as the numerous wellness programs he offered to the community.
On Sept. 18 at the Alumni Plaza, there will be a pre-dedication 10K and 5K run as well as a 5K and 1K fun walk all beginning about 1:30 p.m. followed by food and festivities from 3:30-5 p.m. For more information about all brick purchases or the Ring of Fire event, call (269) 782-1296.
