CASSOPOLIS — A Dowagiac teen with a lengthy criminal history avoided a trip to prison Friday in Cass County Circuit Court.

Judge Michael Dodge sentenced Stacy Pulliam, 17, to 240 days in jail with credit for 59 days already served on a home invasion conviction.

He will also serve a three-year probation term.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Frank Machnik brought up the two felonies and 12 misdemeanors on Pulliam’s juvenile record and recommended a prison term.

Defense attorney Carol Bealor pointed to a letter of recommendation from an adult education instructor at the jail on Pulliam’s behalf.

“She said he is a polite, soft-spoken young man who is a delight to have in the classroom,” Bealor said.
“He wants to turn things around.”

The offense occurred April 19 when Pulliam kicked in a door at a home in Dowagiac and stole loose change and a camera from the residence. He later took the $64 in change to a local bank and attempted to get cash.

Police had already notified area banks to look out for such a transaction, and Pulliam was arrested.

Dodge said he was “shocked” by Pulliam’s lengthy criminal history at just 17 years old and said he faced a “tough decision” in his sentencing.

“We’re only talking small change but what’s really serious is you broke into a home to get it,” Dodge said.
“This is your last chance to avoid prison. You need to wake up.”

Pulliam was also ordered to pay $628 in restitution to replace a door he broke at the home.
