CASSOPOLIS – In May, Stephanie Smith began as the Cass County 4-H program instructor with the charge to expand the youth development program to new heights and audiences in the county.

As a 4-H participant for many years as a youth, Ms. Smith completed projects in sewing, painting, photography, pocket pets, dogs and equine.

Additionally she has held volunteer positions within the Michigan 4-H program, including instructor, assistant leader and foundation member.

She brings to the position a true joy of the 4-H program, its values and initiatives.

She looks to encourage participation in the program of both youth participants and adult volunteers.

There is a great value for today’s youth in participating in 4-H.

Studies show that Michigan youth 4-H participants are less likely to smoke, drink or do drugs.

They are also more likely to have higher levels of academic competence, attend college programs and are more physically active than non-4-H participants.

Smith looks forward to meeting ocal residents and participants in the Cass 4-H program.

She plans to use her experiences in 4-H, education in business administration and input from participants and stakeholders to help develop the program and expand its current activities.

“I am really excited to be here,” Smith said. “Even in times of economic challenges, there are still numerous opportunities to expand programming and development for 4-H participants. It’s my job to help the 4-H program develop outstanding youth who in turn become successful adults. I look forward to meeting everyone involved in 4-H and other families and individuals who want to further the opportunities for youth development in the county.”

Please stop by the 4-H office at 120 N. Broadway, Suite 209, in Cassopolis if you want to learn more about the Cass County 4-H program, or call (269) 445-4438 or go to www.msue.msu.edu/cass.
