CASSOPOLIS — A South Bend teen involved in a string of home invasions in Cass, Berrien and St. Joseph (Ind.) counties is headed to prison.

Facing his sentencings at Cass County Circuit Court Friday for two separate home invasions in Niles, Domenik Briggs was sent to prison for three to 15 years on one of the cases. He will receive credit for 80 days already served. The sentence will run concurrent to a three-year sentence he is serving in Berrien County.

In the other case, which involved the defendants breaking into a occupied home, Judge Michael Dodge rejected the plea and ordered it set for trial.

Briggs, 18, was the lookout in all of the home invasions, including the two in Niles that occurred in September.

The first incident took place on Sept. 14 when Briggs, along with his co-defendants David Sarfo and Michael Adams, broke into a Milton Township home and stole a computer, flat-screen TV, watches and jewelry.

The trio then attempted to break into another home in Milton Township about a week later, but when an alarm sounded they panicked and fled. They later returned to the residence to try to break in again but a woman in the home called police, and they were apprehended.

Mike Layher, the owner of the home, spoke in court.

“September 20, 2010 was supposed to be a good day. It was the birthday of my 7-year-old son,” Layher said. “But that changed when they decided to invade my property… This has added a huge amount of terror to my family.”

Prosecutor Victor Fitz called the break-ins “sophisticated” and “organized,” but what concerned him most is Briggs’ “cavalier” attitude toward the crimes.

“He said he did this because it was something to do,” Fitz said.

Briggs, Sarfo and Adams stole more than $14,000 in the home invasions, Fitz said.

Briggs’ co-defendants have already been sentenced in Cass County. Sarfo was sentenced to 40 months in prison, while Adams received three to 20 years.
