CASSOPOLIS — A Niles woman who stole more than $20,000 worth of equipment from a Niles business is heading to jail.

Lisa Oakes, 43, was sentenced Friday in Cass County Circuit Court to seven months in jail on convictions of larceny and resisting and obstructing a police officer. She will receive credit for 127 days already served. Oakes was also ordered to pay $2,140 in restitution.

The convictions stemmed from two separate incidents. The first occurred in December 2010 when she stole items from Gordon Engineering on Detroit Road in Niles. Judge Michael Dodge said a directional drilling machine that she stole alone was worth $20,000.

The other incident took place in January when she took her son to a gas station, also on Detroit Road, where he committed armed robbery. Oakes later lied to police officers when they questioned her about the crime.

Prosecutor Victor Fitz didn’t hold back in his statements, calling Oakes a “disgrace to motherhood” for helping her son commit a crime.

“There’s a saying to teach your children well. This woman did not,” he said.

Defense attorney Gregory Feldman said his client “wants to be a better grandparent.”

“She has regrets for her decisions as a mom,” he said.

For her part, Oakes was remorseful.

“I’d like to apologize to the court,” she said. “I made a bad decision for what I thought was a good reason.”
