Meet Edwardsburg’s Top Ten

Edwardsburg High School has announced its Top Ten students for 2010-11.

• Valedictorian Katelyn Harvey is the daughter of Robert and Mary Harvey of Niles. Katelyn has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school. She is a member of the National Honor Society and S.A.D.D. She has earned the Academic Excellence Award for three years. Katelyn volunteers her time at the Healthy Family Clinic and helps prepare baskets at Our Lady of the Lake Church. She also participates in volleyball. Katelyn plans on attending Grand Valley State University to become a physical therapist.

• Valedictorian Madeline Smous is the daughter of James and Catherine Smous of Niles. Madeline has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school. She is a member of the National Honor Socity, S.A.D.D. and student council. She was the junior class secretary and on the prom committee. Madeline has been in the school musicals, jazz band and has participated in Michigan solo and ensemble competitions. She also participated in volleyball and track. Madeline volunteers her time as a mentor, Christ Child and RSVP volunteer. She has received several awards: Scholar Athlete, Academic Excellence Award (three years) and NCTE 2010 Writing Contest winner. Madeline plans on attending the University of Michigan to study pre-med and minor in music.

• Salutatorian Michalina Badur is the daughter of Jon and Sandra Badur of Edwardsburg. Michalina has a 3.9853 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society, S.A.D.D., student council and Science Olympiad. Michalina is a junior volunteer at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, mentor to elementary students and is on the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana Summer Camp staff. She plans to attend Central Michigan University to major in elementary education and minor in leadership.

• Jennifer Mackling is the daughter of Scott and  Barb Mackling of Edwardsburg. Jennifer has a 3.9851 GPA. She is a member of Student Council, Business Professionals of America and is the National Honor Society Secretary. She is currently the yearbook editor. Jennifer volunteers her time with Habitat for Humanity, Edwardsburg Food Pantry and is the crew leader for Vacation Bible School. She also participates in volleyball and golf. Jennifer plans on attending the University of Minnesota to major in sports management.

• Matthew Hunter is the son of Sean and Amy Hunter of Edwardsburg. Matthew has a 3.969 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and attends the Math and Science Center through Andrews University.  Matthew participates in the marching band, pep band and pit band. He also volunteers his time at local animal shelters and Goodwill Community Research. Matthew plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to major in computer engineering.

• Pierce Bourgeois is the son of Mark and Robin Bourgeois of Niles. Pierce has a 3.940 GPA. He is the vice president of National Honor Society. Pierce volunteers his time at Memorial Hospital and as a summer school mentor. He has received several awards: Scholar Athlete Award, Academic Excellence Awards (three years) and Science Olympiad Award of Excellence. Pierce is also on the varsity golf team. He plans on attending college to major in pre-medicine and hopes to become an anesthesiologist.

• Robin Carey is the son of Dawn Stewart and Dan Carey of Edwardsburg. Robin has a 3.926 GPA. He has received the Academic Excellence Award for three years. Robin plans on majoring in business at Cornell University, Harvard University or the University of Michigan.

• Seth Hanstra is the son of Thomas and Linda Hanstra of Niles. Seth has a 3.918 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and S.A.D.D. Seth also participates in the marching and pep bands along with the school musicals. He has earned the Academic Excellence Award for three years. He volunteers his time with the Hope Ministries and the South Bend Food Drive. Seth plans on attending Calvin College to study biology.

• Nicole Archambault is the daughter of Joe and Liz Archambault of Edwardsburg. She has a 3.906 GPA. Nicole is a member of the National Honor Society, S.A.D.D. and the Color Guard. She also participates in pit orchestra and pep band. Nicole received the Academic Excellence Award for three years. She plans on majoring in social services at Michigan State University.

• Austin Stinnett is the son of Bill and Dee Stinnett of Edwardsburg. Austin has a 3.882 GPA. He has received the Academic Excellence Award for three years. Austin participates in varsity baseball and varsity football. He has earned several sports awards: First Team All Conference Linebacker (11th and 12th), First Team All Conference Running Back (12th), Academic All District Baseball (11th), All Regional Player (12th), South Bend Tribune Player of the Year (12th) and Scholar Athlete Award (10th-12th). Austin plans on attending Manchester College to study pre-pharmacy and to play football.
