The arrest of a Niles police officer for alleged criminal sexual conduct has opened the door to concern on behalf of parents at Niles Community Schools.

Ivery Cross, 25, was arrested Friday afternoon. He faces preliminary charges of one count first degree and two counts second degree criminal sexual conduct as well as obstructing justice.

In addition to working for the Niles City Police Department, Cross was an assistant football coach at Niles High School.

During a press conference Monday regarding Cross’ arrest, Niles Police Chief Ric Huff said he had informed Supt. Richard Weigel of the situation.

Weigel said Tuesday that unless a coaching position is being filled by a teacher already within the district, the individual is technically an employee of another company called Excalibur.

“They are employed through a private company,” Weigel said.

Cross’ alleged victim is a 19-year-old male and since news broke of the arrest, concern has been mounting about his presence among high school students.

But Weigel confirmed Tuesday that Cross “will not be returning” to the district as assistant coach.

If the preliminary charges hold against the Niles officer, Cross could face life in prison for first degree criminal sexual conduct. Second degree criminal sexual conduct carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

If any parents have concerns, Weigel said they should contact district officials.
