Dowagiac City Council received no comment at a hearing Monday night on two public nuisances which need to be abated, but was contacted by one property owner who was given an extension.

Pamela Kirkland, who lives in the Kalamazoo area, along with her father, Robert Kirkland, owns the house at 114 S. Lowe St., said she attempted to meet with the council March 14, but it lacked a quorum.

“The city is requesting that the home be torn down,” she wrote March 22. “I agree that the the home is a distraction and I am in no financial situatin to keep it or renovate it. Therefore, I am asking that the city allow me until the end of July to have the home torn down.” Building official James Bradford recommended, “I suggest we go 60 days to obtain the permit and 120 to complete the demolition, which would put her in the time frame of what she requested.”

Council also declared property at 307 N. Paul St. owned by Thermotech Services Inc. a public nuisance under the city’s boarding ordinance, which requires the property owner to get a permit and initiate repairs within 15 days and complete repairs within 60 days.
