Whether or not the Niles Community Schools school district will reopen Eastside School will be the subject of a gathering of community members at the school Tuesday night.

Superintendent Richard Weigel is hosting a “Coffee with Richard” community event at Eastside School from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to discuss possible options for reopening the school in the future.

“We have a committee that has been working with me to talk about the potential for reopening Eastside School,” Weigel said in a call to the Star on Monday. “Nothing is a done deal.”

The purpose of the meeting, he added, is to get the thoughts and opinions of the Eastside Community.

“We are looking to get input from the Eastside community on ideas for a potential magnet school and what that might look like,” Weigel said.

The Michigan Education Information System defines a magnet school as “a special school designed to attract students of different backgrounds for the purpose of reducing, preventing or eliminating isolation and/or to provide an academic or social focus on a particular theme (such as) science/math, performing arts, gift/talented or foreign language.”

The goal, Weigel reiterated, is to collect input from the surrounding community and he said if he were to see support, committees would need to be formed to discuss the next steps.
