Every year Texas holds a news competition called “Texas Lonestar Emmy.”

Every news station in Texas is given equal opportunity to send in stories to multiple entry options where they compete against each other for top spots.

First, every entry is watched and reviewed, then the best of the entries are nominated for an Emmy.

On Oct. 16, all the nominees went to Dallas for the awards ceremony.

“I was fortunate enough to win in the Speciality News Feature Segment with a daily piece we do for KIAH 39 News called ‘Simon Says,’ ” Shannon Runyon said.

“Simon Says” is a commentary segment “that has to do with subjects ranging from texting and driving to the BP oil spill to UFOs.”

“I won an Emmy for the shooting and editing I do on this piece,” she said.

“Steve Simon, the reporter who writes this piece, also won an Emmy.”

If you want to see what they look like, go to www.39online.com or to her personal Web site, www.shannonrunyon.com.

“I love shooting and editing, so winning a Lonestar Emmy is really great affirmation towards what I do,” said Runyon, whose first Emmy a year ago was for a segment she did called “Remembering 9-11.”

Shannon is the chief photographer for KIAH 39 television station in Houston.

She is a graduate of Spring Arbor College in Spring Arbor and the daughter of Norm and Rose Runyon of Dowagiac.
