Niles golf team ninth at tourney

THREE RIVERS — The opening day of the Big 16 Conference Golf Tournament found Battle Creek Lakeview at the top of the heap after shooting 358 as a team at Pineview Golf Club.

Marshall was second with a 366 and Coldwater third with a 372. Rounding out the top five were Portage Central (386) and St. Joseph (396).

Niles finished ninth out of 14 school with a 436.

Marshall’s Jill Peacock was the medalist on the day with a round of 82.

Sophie Nielsen led the Vikings with a 96, which was good for 20th place overall.

Nichole Sly shot 110, while Taylor Glick shot 113, Paxton Schaller 117 and Allison Dawson 132.

Abby Mattson finished with a 153.

Wolverine Conference

OTSEGO — The Dowagiac golf team played a pair of Wolverine Conference Jamborees on Wednesday.

The league started in Allegan at the Lynx Golf Course and concluded the day at Prairie Wood in the afternoon.

Dowagiac placed sixth, its best finish of  the season, at the Lynx after shooting a 211.

Otsego won the jamboree with a team total of 192, while Plainwell was second with a 193.

Vicksburg finished third with a 201, Gull Lake fourth with a 203, Comstock fifth with a 209 and Dowagiac sixth with a 211.

Three Rivers was seventh (215), Paw Paw eighth (226), Allegan ninth (226) and South Haven 10th (245).

Haley Smith shot 49 for the Chieftains, who also got a 51 from Lauren Smith, a 55 from Kaye Swartz, a 56 from Maggie Cripe and a 72 from Jessica Caldwell.

At Prairie Wood, Dowagiac was eighth with a 219.

Ostego completed the sweep with a 183, while Allegan was second with a 191 and Vicksburg third with a 192.

League-leading Plainwell finished fourth with a 204. Three Rivers and Gull Lake both shot 205 with Comstock shooting 218. Dowagiac and Paw Paw both shot 219 and South Haven 234.

Lauren Smith finished with a 52 and Haley Smith a 53, Cripe shot 54 and Swartz 60. Rikki Baker finished with a 92, but her score broke the tie between Dowagiac and Paw Paw for eighth.
