PAW PAW — The Niles girls golf team’s collective score of 240 may have been good enough to win many different matches but certainly not against St. Joseph.

The Bears shot a 184, a nine-hole school record at the SMAC West Jamboree at Heritage Glen.

Benton Harbor finished in third with a 247 and Mattawan fourth with a 253.

St. Joseph was so good its fourth best scorer, Stef Hoffman, had a better score than any other team’s top finisher with a 49.

Niles was led by Sophie Nielsen’s 55.

The Vikings also got a 59 from Paxton Schaller and 63s from Sarah Cramer, Abby Mattson and Nichole Sly.

Wolverine Conference

SOUTH HAVEN – The Wolverine Conference golf chase is quickly becoming a four-team event.

League-leading Plainwell put another point between itself and runner-up Otsego Monday morning at the third event staged at Hawkhead in South Haven.

The Trojans shot 183 to best second place Otsego by nine strokes at the Bulldogs finished with a 192, which was one-shot better than third place Vicksburg.

Allegan jumped up and finished fourth with a 205, while Gull Lake continues to drop back in the standings after placing fifth with a 205.

Rounding out the order of finish were Three Rivers 223, Comstock, 228, South Haven 233, Paw Paw 235 and Dowagiac 243.

There has been just one medalist so far this season and that has been Plainwell’s Hannah Lewis.

Lewis shot 36 on Monday morning to finish two strokes ahead of Otsego’s Brittany Haight who shot 38.

Plainwell now has 29 points in the overall standings, three better than Otsego’s 26. Vicksburg remains third with 24 points and Gull Lake is still fourth with 21.

Comstock (16), Three Rivers (15), Allegan (14), Paw Paw (10), South Haven (6) and Dowagiac (6) are fifth through 10th.

Dowagiac was led by Haley Smith, who shot 50 for the third consecutive match.

and shot 60. Lauren Cripe finished with a 61, while Jessica Caldwell shot 71 and Kaye Swartz 72.

The conference heads to The Lynx and to Prairie Wood on Wednesday for a double dip.
