Driver falls asleep, drifts off the road

An Indiana man was injured in an accident July 10 when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and drifted off the road.

Sheriff Joseph Underwood Jr. reports that at about 8:07 p.m. July 10, his office investigated a personal injury crash that occurred on M-60 west of Vandalia in Penn Township, Cass County.

Stephen R. Irvin, 53, of Lakeville, Ind. was traveling eastbound on M-60 when it is believed he fell asleep and traveled off the road striking multiple trees.

He was transported to Burgess Hospital in Dowagiac for treatment.

It is unknown if a seatbelt was used and alcohol may be a factor.

Assisting were Penn Township Fire Department and Life Care Ambulance.

This case is still under investigation.
