Uninsured woman shoots self to get medical help

A 41-year-old Niles woman reportedly shot herself in the shoulder in an attempt to obtain treatment for a pre-existing medical condition.

Officers from the Niles City Police Department were sent to a home in the 1500 block of Michigan Street Thursday around 4 p.m. on the report that a person had been shot.

Officers located 41-year-old Kathy Myers, who had a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Niles City Fire Department and Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service personnel attended to the injury. Myers was transported to Lakeland Hospital in Niles for treatment of what appears to be a non-life threatening injury.

Further investigation revealed the gun shot was self-inflicted with a .25 caliber handgun.

Myers could not be reached for comment by presstime.
