EAST LANSING – The Division 2 Boys Golf Finals at Forest Akers West had a one-hour rain delay that changed the fate of Niles’ Chris Noble on Friday.

At even par with three holes remaining, Noble’s shot to the 18th green ended up under a pine tree as the horn sounded to call the golfers off the course.

Noble and Vikings’ coach Greg Gunder talked about how to play the shot and how to approach the final two holes once play resumed.

Gunder said that when Noble came to the clubhouse after completing his round, he said ‘you know the phrase, when you shoot yourself in the foot?’ I said oh, oh. But he said it with a smile on his face.”

Noble ended up taking a seven on the hole which put him four over par.

He bogeyed one of his final two holes and ended up shooting 76 in the opening round of the two-day tournament, five strokes back of the leader.

“He’s not out of it by any means,” Gunder said. “He’s not that far from making it in the top 10 either, which is his goal.”

Noble currently tied for 13th place.

Flint Kearsley’s Jon Walraven leads after the first round with a 71.

Trevor Rosekraus of Haslett fired an opening round 72, while Francesco Ruffino of Birmingham-Seaholm shot 73, as did David Veen of Grand Rapids Christian, Alex Jones of DeWitt and Cody Shoemaker of Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
