BATTLE CREEK – The goal on Friday of the Niles golf team at the Battle Creek Invitational was to finish in the top five.

But after leaving a few strokes out on the course, Vikings coach Greg Gunder felt that wasn’t an unreasonable goal.

Niles finished ninth after shooting a 333.

Holt was the team champion at the Cedar Creek Golf Club after finishing with a 312.

Grand Ledge was second with a 319 and Battle Creek Lakeview third with a 320.

Battle Creek Harper Creek (325) and Jackson (327) rounded out the top five.

“I told them do the math,” Gunder said. “Six strokes, couldn’t we have finished in the top five? We need to work on managing our game.”

Niles junior Chris Noble did his part as for the third time this year he earned medalist honors after shooting a 3-under par 69.

The Vikings also got an 84 from John Schrader, a pair of 90s from Cole Hensel and Christian Ezell, along with a 93 from Sam Clark and a 94 from Jared Langmeyer.
