Once again it was like night and day for the Dowagiac baseball team Monday night.

The Chieftains played extremely well in a 4-1 win over visiting St. Joseph in the opening game.

But in the nightcap, Dowagiac was anything but good in losing 20-5 in four innings.

Aaron Blaske was masterful on the mound in the opener as he worked into the seventh inning, allowing just four hits, while striking out three.

Zac Hyatt came on and recorded the final out to pick up the save.

“Blaske pitched a whale of a game,” Dowagiac coach Bryan Henry said.

The Chieftains had seven hits, led by Hyatt, who singled and doubled.

Brett Scanlon and Jason Turner both doubled and drove in runs. Cody Cox also singled and drove in a run.

In the second game, Dowagiac used four pitchers that combined for 14 walks and allowed 14 hits.

The Chieftains led 4-3 after an inning of play, but gave up 10 runs in the third inning and seven runs in the fourth to turn the contest into a rout.

Scanlon hit a two-run homerun for the Chieftains, who also got two hits from Blaske, while Jason Turner singled and drove in a run.

Turner started for the Chieftains, who also used Hyatt, Cody Cox and Andrew Kurdelmeyer on the mound.

The Chieftains are back in action on Friday when they travel to Allegan for a Wolverine Conference doubleheader.
