The seniors from Marcellus visited the new track facility Friday at Brandywine and enjoyed the surroundings to the dismay of the junior laden Bobcat thinclads as the boys were defeated 73-64 with 107-27 being the girls outcome.

“Some of the Marcellus kids said this is a pretty cool set up to me as all of us are very proud of our state of the art place due to many people,” stated Brandywine boys coach Terry Borr. “Our younger kids are excited as are juniors are leading the way both on and off the track which we are trying to build a program with help from every class.”

Leading the way for the visitors was veteran Zac Eggerding who captured both the hurdle races along with the 100 dash as classmates Zachary Williams (discus) and Jonathan Swartz (high and long jumps) were thorns against the Bobcats. The trio scored more than half of the points for the victors.

Managing Marcellus to a pair of victories in the 800 and 1600 runs was freshman Marcus Pompey who narrowly nosed out Stone Hadley in the latter race in the most exciting event of the meet.

The two longest relay (800 and 1600) races were each won by a group of Brandywine 2011 graduates with David Dykema, Lance Prescott, Aaron Marquardt, Demetrius Burt, AJ Srmek and Hadley being the participants.

“Our goal is to get some kids to qualify for state and our relay teams are getting better all the time,” noted Borr. “Jake Wieger has improved dramatically in the pole vault and David Dykema has done a great job with surprising times in this meet with the wind problem.”

Dykema had his best day ever on the track by accomplishing his lowest times ever in capturing the 200 and 400 sprints along with the 800 quartet baton squad and classmate Wieger closed out the meet by out vaulting Swartz by six inches.

Brandywine won three events in the girls portion of the meet as juniors Pandhra Phegley, Kelci Lockwood and senior Dawn Smith took first in the 300 hurdles, 3200 run and shot put respectively.

“We have doubled (5-6 to 10-12) our turnout with the new track being the reason, but we also have to compete against soccer, softball and tennis which are established programs,” said Brandywine girls coach Becky Shafer. “This is a sport you need to work hard to be good so I am pleased with the girls as we are a young team with good attitudes, but could use a couple injured athletes who will be back next year.”

Setting a school record this year for Marcellus was senior Zoey Klein who rose to 8-10 inches in the pole vault.
