OXFORD, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its doubleheader with Miami University by scores of 3-1 and 10-1, respectively, at the MU Softball Stadium Friday, April 9. The Eagles fall to 11-17 overall, 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference while Miami moves to 18-15 (3-1 MAC).

In game one, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Sarah Gerber RBI double to left-field, scoring Lauren Delapaz on the play. The score would remain that way until the bottom of the sixth when Miami scored three times on four hits, the key hit coming from Sarah Billstrom. Her single to center-field took a tricky hop, resulting in a fielding error allowing Alicia Hogl to score the go-ahead run from second base.

The sixth inning was the only frame that gave EMU starting pitcher Jamie Melchert trouble. Prior to that, the junior had allowed just four hits while striking out four RedHawks and walking none. The Eagles went down in order in the top half of the seventh to drop game one, 3-1.

Miami starting pitcher Jessica Simpson allowed just the run on three hits, striking out three and walking one to earn her 11th win of the season.

Miami’s sixth inning rally in game one carried over into game two as they scored five runs in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third on its way to a 10-1 game two victory. Hogl added the final three-run tally with her second home run of the season off Michelle Hletko. The senior relieved EMU starter Jenna Ignowski who faced a tough RedHawks lineup Friday.

The Eagles’ lone tally came from Nellie Coquillard who blasted her first career home run, a solo shot in the fourth inning. Coquillard went 2-for-5 in the doubleheader in her first two games back after missing seven straight. She was the only Eagle to record multiple hits on the day.

EMU was out-hit 8-3 in game one and 7-3 in game two. The Eagles will head west to do battle with the Ball State University Cardinals in Muncie, Ind. Saturday and Sunday April 10-11. Live Stats and audio will be provided for both games.
