This year, the American Cancer Society has declared “a world with less cancer is a world with more birthdays.”

That idea is the theme for this year’s Relay for Life event, taking place in communities large and small all across the country.

The Niles-Buchanan Relay for Life will hold its annual kick-off Wednesday night, providing information and sign-up for individuals and teams interested in taking part in the event this year, raising money to fund research in the fight against cancer.

The goal overall, co-chairwoman Kellie Wyman said Monday, is “just to raise as much money as we can to help eliminate cancer and have more funding for the different studies. At kick-off, we’re going to introduce the American Cancer Society and what Relay for Life does.”

The theme and various ways to raise funds will also be discussed during the kick-off at St. Mary’s School in Niles at 6 p.m.

“It’s really for new teams to come and get an idea of what we are,” Wyman said.
Individuals interested in getting involved are also welcome and Wyman said, “if they’re really interested, we always ask people to come in and join other teams. Any involvement is great.”

The Niles-Buchanan Relay for Life event is scheduled for July 10 and 11.
