RICHLAND – For the 11th time in the past 13 seasons, the Allegan Tigers are the champions of the Wolverine Conference in wrestling.

The Tigers placed 12 in the finals on Saturday at Gull Lake High School and brought home nine individual championships to easily claim the title.

Allegan scored 278 points, while runner-up Otsego finished with 152.5 points. South Haven was third with 130 points and Three Rivers fourth with 129.5.

Gull Lake rounded out the top five with 94.5 points.

Dowagiac, which had a goal of finishing in the top five, took sixth with 87 points.

“From a team perspective, Dowagiac wrestled as well as they have in two years,” Dowagiac coach John Green said. “That was pretty tough competition with 16 wrestlers ranked in the conference. We held our own. I was hoping to make a move on Gull Lake, but it didn’t quite happen.”

The Chieftains had just one wrestler reach the finals.

Ben Luth placed second at 130-pounds after being pinned by Allegan’s Taylor Simaz in 3:35.

Dowagiac did have a trio of wrestlers take third place.

Andrew Roden pinned Allegan’s Robbie Wilson in 1:19 of the consolation finals, while Kasey Proshwitz needed quadruple overtime to win his 140-pound match over Shane Chapman of Paw Paw, 4-2.

Heavyweight Sinjin Ownby was the other Chieftain grappler to place third as he pinned Trent Schoolcraft of South Haven in 47 seconds.

Dowagiac’s Ryan Smit placed fourth at 125-pounds after falling to South Haven’s Zach Tate 5-2.

Anthony Nelson also took fourth at 215-pounds after being pinned by Dylan Bramble of Gull Lake in 1:30.

Daniel Crandall went 2-2 on the day, while Jacob Worthington, Logan Pellow and Ricky Roach were all 1-2. Jacob Brom was 0-2.

Lakeland Conference
COLOMA – The Lakeland Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday was supposed to be to crown Buchanan, which came into the meet as the regular season champion.
Edwardsburg had other ideas.

The Eddies need to just finish ahead of the Bucks to earn a share of the league title.

The Eddies did their part by winning the meet with 200 points. Buchanan, however, finished third with 155 points and saw its league title slip away when Coloma claimed the second spot with 174 points.

The final league standings will read Edwardsburg in first and Buchanan in second. Coloma finishes third overall with Berrien Springs and Brandywine finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

That’s the same way the Shamrocks and Bobcats finished on Saturday. Berrien Springs finished with 104 points and Brandywine 74. Cassopolis was sixth with 30 points.

The Eddies had three individual champions and seven grapplers finish second.

Winning titles for Edwardsburg were Ivan Shaw (103), Cameron Warren (125) and Devin Bywaters (189).
