Lakeshore rolls to big win at county meet

ST. JOSEPH – With 14 wrestlers in the final and eight individual champions, it didn’t come as much of a surprise as to why Lakeshore won its 25th Berrien County Meet title Saturday at St. Joseph High School.

The Lancers were the overwhelming favorites coming into the 31st annual event and they didn’t disappoint.

Lakeshore scored 386 points to easily outdistance runner-up Buchanan, which finished with 184.5 points. St. Joseph was third with 145.5 points and Coloma fourth (120).

Berrien Springs finished fifth with 112 points.

Niles and Brandywine placed sixth and seventh with 110 and 97 points respectively.
Rounding out the order of finish were Watervliet (67), Eau Claire (37), Benton Harbor (36) and Lake Michigan Catholic/Countryside (32).

Winning championships for Lakeshore were defending county champions Kyle Frese (103), Tyler Daniel 112), Tyler Frese (119), Nick Humes (152) and Tyler Humes (171). Also winning titles for the Lancers were Payne Hayden (140) and Kyle Carson (285).
For Tyler Humes it was the first wrestling action of the season. Humes injured his back during football season.

Buchanan had a pair of champions as Gage Hutchison and Mack Green were winners at 160- and 215-pounds.

Hutchison pinned Lakeshore’s Christian Nitz in 2:42, while Green, who is now 21-0 on the season, edged Lakeshore’s Ryan Brandt 4-3 in overtime.

Buchanan’s T.J. Miller finished second at 152-pounds after being pinned by Nick Humes in 2:54, and Taylor Glavin was second at 103-pounds after falling to Kyle Frese 13-6.

Niles had a pair of runners-up in Gage Pearison at 119-pounds and Colin Burandt at 125.

Pearison was defeated by Tyler Frese 6-3, while Burandt was defeated by Lakeshore’s Brett Glaske 6-4.

Brandywine had one runner-up as Ralph Sater was defeated by Reuben Navarro of Coloma 13-7 in the finals.
