Accident reroutes traffic

This was the scene of an early morning accident Tuesday, involving two vehicles on South 11th Street in Niles.

Traffic had to be rerouted early Tuesday morning in Niles after an accident on South 11th Street. The Niles City Police Department is investigating a traffic crash which occurred around 7:20 a.m., Tuesday.

According to Police Chief Ric Huff, as of Tuesday afternoon, it appeared a car driven by Carmen Harpole of Niles was traveling north on South 11th Street in the 1200 block when it allegedly crossed the roadway into the southbound lanes and collided with a minivan driven by Lisa Wolff-Murdock of Niles.

The cause of this traffic crash is still under investigation. Both drivers, the only occupants, were extricated from their vehicles by the Niles City Fire Department and transported to hospitals for treatment by SMCAS.

The Niles City Police Department and the Michigan State Police closed the affected section of South 11th Street and rerouted traffic while medical aid was given and the on scene investigation was completed.
