The final score will read that Wolverine Conference leader Plainwell defeated Dowagiac 3-1 in a league soccer match.

But what won’t be read is just how well the Chieftains played against the perennial powerhouse.

Dowagiac stood toe-to-toe with the Trojans after the opening 15 minutes when Plainwell grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Andrew Urban and Daniel Hampstor scored for the Trojans in the opening 13 minutes of the Monday afternoon match.

Urban scored in the eighth minute and Hampstor made it 2-0 in the 13th minute.

After that, the two teams traded scoring chances with neither team able to get one in the back of the net the remainder of the first half.

Plainwell increased its lead to 3-0 on a goal by Tyler Trun in the 43rd minute.

The Chieftains were able to avert the shut out four minutes later when Hazen McMeeken scored in the 47th minute.

Dowagiac outshot Plainwell 20-19.

“We were unable to finish on several goal opportunities, on the other hand, we played well on the field and Jason Turner played great in the goal,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said.
