Buchanan’s Lauren Kilgore won three events at the Michigan YMCA State Swimming Championships held recently at Jenison High School.

She was also the high-point winner in the 9-10 age division.

Kilgore won the 100-yard individual medley, setting a new team record. She also won the 50-yard breaststroke. In winning the 200-yard freestyle, Kilgore broke both the team and state record.

A fifth grader at Buchanan Middle School, Kilgore has been on the YMCA team since she was five years old. She holds six of seven eight and under team records and 11 of 14 records for the nine and 10 year olds.

She began breaking records as a seven year old. She snapped the 23-year-old record in the 25-yard breaststroke for swimmers seven and under. She holds numerous meet records in YMCA invitationals throughout Michigan.

She is competing this weekend in Canton, Ohio in the Great Lakes YMCA Zone meet.

Alex Kilgore breaks record

Alex Kilgore, an eighth grader at Buchanan Middle School, recently broke a 38-year-old record in the 100-yard backstroke at the Michigan YMCA State Swimming Championships in Grand Rapids.

Kilgore’s time was 1:01.90.

Kilgore, who had surgery in early September after suffering a football injury, was a part-time swimmer for the YMCA team.

Not being able to participate in football allowed Kilgore to devote all his time to swimming this season.

He also won the West Michigan Conference championship in the 100 backstroke. He placed fourth in the backstroke at the state meet.

Kilgore is competing this weekend in Canton, Ohio in the Great Lakes YMCA Zone meet.
