Niles’ Vota selected for regional team

NILES — Niles sophomore-to-be Cade Vota has been selected by USA Baseball to play on the Great Lakes 15U team in a tournament Friday through Sunday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

Players from across the country will be competing for various regions in the tournament. There are 16 regions and six age divisions.

Following the final National Team Identification Series event, USA baseball will invite a minimum of 68 players to future national team trials, for the National Team Development Program and Tournament of Stars.

Following those events, a team will be selected to play on Team USA in 2019.

Niles varsity coach, and Cade’s father, Mike Vota says that being selected is an honor.

“It is a great experience for him personally, and reflects highly on the skill level for baseball in southwest Michigan,” he said. “It is a unique experience to play on the same field that players like Bryce Harper did when they were with Team USA. This is a very elite group here. There are 16 Regions with 18 guys per team. Some of the best players from across the United States will be there. It is an honor to have the chance to play, represent the region and wear USA across your chest.”

The Great Lakes team will face the Ohio Valley team in its first game at 11 a.m. today.

The winner of that game will face the winner of the New England and North Atlantic regions.

The losers from that opening game will play at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Winner’s bracket games are scheduled for 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday.

Games will wrap up on Sunday. The consolation games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. and championship game is scheduled for 10:15 a.m.
