Workers at the KB Village Express in Cassopolis have decided that they would like to help collect food for Helping Hands of Cass County’s food pantry.

So on Oct. 3, they are asking customers and community members to “Fill Bill’s Trailer.”

From 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., they will be accepting donations for the food pantry. Adults bringing in a can of food or non-perishable item will receive a free chocolate chip cookie. Children who bring in food or a non-perishable item will receive a bag they can use for trick-or-treat or other activities.

By bringing in an item for the food pantry, participants will also be entered into a drawing for a flat-screen television and a Monster Energy tailgate tent.

“All you have to do to qualify is bring a can a food,” Jeri Lynn Weston said. “We are going to pull the trailer around in front and try to fill it up.”

In addition to the food drive on Saturday, other community groups are responding to the need.

Midwest Energy and Budweiser are donating money for the pantry and other vendors are expected to get on board before Oct. 3.

“Robert (Collins), one of our employees runs every day and he runs in marathons and he is going to be carrying a backpack, so if anybody sees him running, he will take food donations.” Weston said. “We just thought maybe we could bring the community together and get some food for Helping Hands.”

The group will also be accepting money for the food bank. Checks should be made out to Helping Hands. Donors need to include their phone number on the checks.

“The village and the area around Cassopolis is in dire need of people to help,” KB Village Express owner Bill Stoler said. “This is just one thing. Fortunately we have a great employee that has taken this on as a project and we are behind her 100 percent because we feel very strongly about the need for this in the community.”
