Movie review: The Possession

“The Possession”
2.5 out of 5 stars
Genre: Horror, thriller
Rated: R

For mainstream movie fans, the producer, Sam Raimi, is best known for the “Spider-Man” trilogy. For horror movie lovers, he is the director of fan favorites, such as “Army of Darkness,” “The Evil Dead Films” and, most recently, “Drag Me To Hell.” Even though Raimi can’t always create a perfect story, he still has amazing talent.

Star Jeffery Dean Morgan (“Watchmen”) works with director Ole Bornedal, who managed to take enough pages out of Raimi’s playbook to present audiences with a terrifying new take on the “possessed young person.”

Unfortunately, despite the outstanding acting, the overall experience was terrible. “The Possession” fails to give the audience exorcism moments.

The best parts are in the trailer. The first hour of the movie is talking and building up, and nothing makes you jump. It isn’t until the last half hour that the move gets pretty good.

Here’s the storyline: Clyde and Stephanie Brenek’s youngest daughter buys a wooden box from a garage sale. The couple later figures out the box holds a spirit that inhabits and kills its human host. Sounds really cool, but it isn’t.

The movie reminded me a lot of “A Haunting in Connecticut,” which was also horrifying and not in a good way.

Overall, the audience only jumped a few times, and there was nothing special about “The Possession.”

Luckily for lovers of horror, there are many more movies coming out this year.
