Dowagiac golfers hosting Wolverine tournament

The Dowagiac golf team tuned up for today’s Wolverine Conference Tournament with a 167-201 win over visiting Cassopolis at Spruce Ridge Tuesday.

The Chieftains are the host team for the league tournament, which will be held at Hampshire Country Club. Golf is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

Otsego comes into the tournament having won all 10 jamborees. The Bulldogs have won those by more than 12 strokes on the average.

The battle today will be for second place as Plainwell, Sturgis and Edwardsburg are separated by five strokes.

The Bulldogs have 100 points, while Plainwell and Sturgis are second and third with 74 and 73 points respectively. The Eddies have 69 points.

Dowagiac is currently seventh with 42 points. The Chieftains could move up a spot with a good showing on its home course.

“It will be nice to play in a big event at our home course where our guys can feel a little comfortable,” Dowagiac coach Bob Turner said. “We are looking to make a good showing at the conference tournament to give our guys a boost going into districts next week at Island Hills.”

Golf is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

Against the Rangers Tuesday, David Brogan led the Chieftains with a round of 38 to win medalist honors.

Cassopolis was led by Colin Kelley’s 46.
