Steve Wells wins Club Car Senior Open

It took two steady rounds as Steve Wells was able to follow up his (-4) 68 on July 13 with a (-2) under par round of 70 on Wednesday to hold off this very strong field at Bedford Valley Golf Club and win his first Club Car Senior Open.

Wells’ (-6) under par total was good for a two-shot victory over Bob Ackerman and Bill Mory.

Wells is the head golf professional at Hampshire Country Club.

This victory gives Wells an exemption into this year’s Tournament of Champions at the end of the month.

Bill Zylstra from Plymouth was this year’s low amateur. Zylstra shot a pair of 71s to give him a seventh place finish.

Boys stroke play

FARMINGTON HILLS — Jeremy Ball (Bloomfield Hills/The Heathers Club) knew when he hit his 9-iron on the 18th hole at Glen Oaks GC and landed 15 feet from the hole that he was going to end his day on a positive note.

He birdied the hole and won the 2nd GAM Boys Stroke Play Championship with a 72-75-147.

“I didn’t really know where anyone was in the standings or how anyone else was doing,” said Ball, 14. “But I knew that was a good shot and that it might give me the chance for a good finish. It turned out to be a very clutch shot because that birdie is what gave me the win.”

Ball topped runner-up Ashwin Arasu (Ann Arbor) by two strokes.

“I wasn’t hitting my driver all that well but I managed to make some good shots on the fairway and make some good hits around the green and that was the difference I think,” said Ball. “My putting was on and off but overall I’m happy with how I played.”

Ball will play for Brother Rice next year.
