Sheriff ticketing unbelted drivers

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the annual spring “Click It or Ticket” campaign by conducting seatbelt enforcement patrols and ticketing unbelted motorists May 21 through June 3.
Nearly 160 Michigan law enforcement agencies will take to the streets focusing on unbuckled motorists utilizing daytime seatbelt enforcement zones and nighttime mobile patrols.
In 2011, nearly 200 people who died in traffic crashes in Michigan were not wearing seatbelts.
Michigan law requires all drivers, front seat passengers and passengers 15 and younger in any position in the vehicle to be buckled up.
Children must be in a car seat or booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall. Children must be in a car seat or booster seat until they reach the age requirement or the height requirement, whichever comes first.
Parents who need their child seat checked to ensure it is properly installed and of a proper design and type for their child should contact the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office also has booster and infant car seats available for those families who cannot afford them. The seats are made available through a grant from the Michigan Office of Highway and Safety Planning. For more information contact the sheriff’s office at (269) 445-1240.
