The Cassopolis Public Schools are continuing to put in motion projects that the voters approved with the passage of the millage in November.

According to Cassopolis Superintendent Tracy Hertsel, the district is going to be seeking bids on multiple projects over the next few weeks.

“There are a lot of projects due this month that will go out for bid,” Hertsel said. “They are all going to be spring to summertime projects, but we want to get out in the bidding arena early so by the end of January — some of the big ones like the total refurbishment of the track and the roof on the high school and anything that wasn’t attended to at Sam Adams. We will also be addressing the interior rooms at the high school, which will be a large thing and very much needed.”

Hertsel added that things are moving along at a smooth pace for the district.

Board meeting

At its regular school board meeting at Squires Education Center Monday night, the board hired two new employees.

Hired were Patty Ballard-Works, who will be a non-instructional paraprofessional for two hours a day at Sam Adams Elementary and Lea Hodges as a bus driver.

Snow days

Cassopolis, like all the school districts in southwest Michigan, used its first snow day of the 2015-16 school year Tuesday.

Hertsel said the state of Michigan allows for six “act of God” days, but that Cassopolis has built in a couple of more days after last year’s extremely cold and snowy winter.

“Basically, some school calendars accomodate going beyond that,” Hertsel said. “We actually built in a couple of days beyond that after the last couple of years. Right now we are really in good shape compared to the last couple of years.

“We are almost to mid-January and this is only our first day. We have not had any delays this year, which also figures into that time.”
