Buchanan’s season ends in 26-20 playoff loss to Napoleon

NAPOLEON — The Buchanan football team’s season came to an end Friday night.

The Bucks fell to Napoleon 26-20 in Division 6 pre-district play at Napoleon High School.

The Pirates (7-3) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead with two rushing touchdowns (1-yard and 27-yard runs) before Ryan Hickok scored for Buchanan (6-4) on a 1-yard run (conversion failed), making the score 14-6 entering halftime. In the third quarter, Brody Reed returned a kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown (conversion failed) to cut the deficit to 14-12 before Napoleon responded with a 47-yard rushing touchdown to take a 20-12 lead.

Napoleon scored again on a 15-yard run to make the score 26-12 in the fourth. The Bucks would not go quietly, as Reed scored his second special teams touchdown on a 60-yard kickoff return (2PC good) to round out the scoring.

The Pirates (7-3) outgained Buchanan (6-4) in total offense 275 to 149 yards, including a 266 to 133 edge in rushing yards.

Max Cornelius led the Bucks with 61 rushing yards on 15 carries and Hickok rushed for 33 yards and one touchdown on seven carries while Reed tallied 139 return yards and two touchdowns on two kickoff returns. Cy Carlin completed 3 of 11 passes for 16 yards and Owen Thompson led the receivers with two catches for nine yards. Defensively, Matthew Stines-Vancourt led the Bucks with four solo tackles and three assists.
